17: UnderOATH/Maylene and the Sons of Disaster/Poison the Well/Everytime I Die 2007

When Mom asked me to go to this concert with her, I kind of gave her a strange look. UnderOATH wasn’t really my style. I’ve never been much for those bands that scream their lyrics. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always been and always will be a rocker at heart, but the screaming was just never for me.

Anyway, I opted to go with her. It was the whole gang, my sister and brother, mom and me, together again for a concert, so I knew it would be fun.

So we all went together, got some sodas at the Historic Hotel Congress before the show. We were all fairly bored and I’ve outgrown waiting in long lines just to get a front row spot only to be killed in the mosh pit. After we finally did go in, I made a bad move standing in the front anyway, with chancalas on *for those of you not down with Mexican/American terms: chancalas=flip flops*. But, oh man, it was so worth it! And those of you moshers, especially seasoned ones like me, you know what I am talking about. Its not so mush the moshing, getting thrown around like a rag doll, but the whole experience of just being there.

And oh yeah, I wasn’t moving much after that show!

After a while, I think it was around the time Everytime I Die *Horrible band* came up, I decided to keep myself from getting injured, and went to stand in the back with mom. It was the first and only non-Christian band I ever saw that was THAT vulgar and THAT disgusting. I shudder even now to think of that part because it was just horrible. Kids were being carried out unconscious and bleeding profusely, something not seen during Maylene or PTW, or even UnderOATH! It was sick to think that those kids really had no idea what kind of atmosphere they were really in at that point.

As for the concert review, AMAZING! I totally fell in love with Maylene that night, they just blew me away! I ran out and bought their CD the very next week. They were all over the place dancing and rocking out. It was one of the best live shows I’ve ever been to. PTW was awesome too, they have some great songs, but I don’t listen to them all that much, to be honest.

UnderOATH was the BEST part of the entire night. As I mentioned before, I never really cared much for that style, until that night. They really blew me away with their passion for Jesus and their amazing lyrics and songs, even the vocals. I really learned to love them that night, and now, I listen to them quite a bit. I have even gotten into listening to that style a lot more since the concert.

I loved going out to a show with my family again, there’s really nothing like it. And unless you’ve been to a show with my mom, you really don’t have a clue what I mean. Bless her heart, she loves to head bang, but due to a back injury, she just can’t anymore. I have to say though, she’s still my favorite concert buddy. =)
