...Ponderings...

My thoughts on life, love, family, friends, and God.

Well, this week I have TWO reviews! That’s right, I read two books. They were short, but equaled to around 500 pages total.

Book one: Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

When a map of the famed Treasure Island, which leads to Captain Flint’s legendary treasure, seemingly falls into the lap of young Jim Hawkins, he and his friends Dr. Livesey and the Squire Trelawney, embark on what appears to be a routine journey. Their adventure turns into one of fear when Jim learns of ship cook Long John Silver’s plan to kill the good men aboard.

It comes to a final standoff in which Jim learns that life is neither black nor white most times.

Book two: The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Mary Lennox is a spiteful, pale, ugly creature when she goes to live in her Uncle Craven’s enormous house in England. She had been raised practically alone, never really seeing her parents because they didn’t really want her at all. When the cholera takes them, she is left with little else in the world.

While she is at Misselthwaite, she slowly learns what it is to be a real child. One day while wandering the endless corridors, she discovers a boy she didn’t even know existed. Colin Craven, her Uncle Craven’s estranged son, is believed to be a poor ailing invalid child who will never live to see his next birthday. Upon their discovery of one another, wondrous things begin to happen.

Mary had learned of an abandoned garden, once belonging to Colin’s mother. When she was killed in a tragic accident, Master Craven had the thing closed up, never to be opened again. However, when little sour Mary hears of this, it is the best thing that could have happened to her and the entire manor.

Through a period of time, Colin learns to walk, Mary learns to love, and they all learn to appreciate the world around them with new eyes.

Happy summer reading, SR Clubbers!
